Airbnb blocks greedy Glasgow host who demanded extra $2000 from guest for COP26 booking

A greedy Airbnb host who tried to force his guest to pay an extra $2000 has been blocked from accepting bookings during COP26.

We told how the Glasgow landlord had messaged his guest, who will be travelling over from America for the climate conference, to demand he pay the extra money or he would have his booking cancelled.

Tan Copsey, a senior director with an American organisation aimed at tackling climate change, had booked early to stay in Glasgow over COP26.

The Airbnb host took the booking without realising it fell during the event, which has caused rental prices to rocket by around 300% in comparison to 2019.

Fearing that he would 'miss out on a great deal of money', he tried to add an extra $2000 onto the booking.

Tan decided to cancel the booking in light of the exchange, freeing up the host to take another booking at an inflated price.

However, Airbnb has now stepped in to ensure the host isn't able to take another booking after losing the original guest.

A spokesperson for the company said: "We have zero tolerance for this behaviour and have taken action against the Host and blocked them from accepting other bookings during this period.

"The guest has been refunded in full and we have offered support in helping them find alternative accommodation. Airbnb is donating all its service fees for stays in Glasgow during COP26 to Zero Waste Scotland.”

The guest has now been given a refund for his stay and has been offered support to find alternative accommodation.
