Air quality dips in Delhi, wet weekend likely

NEW DELHI: Several parts of Delhi received rain on Friday. India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted rain for the weekend as well.

Safdarjung, which is the city’s base station, recorded 7.5mm rainfall between 8.30am and 8.30 pm. Palam saw only 1.2mm rainfall during the same period. However, some parts of north Delhi received moderate rain. Delhi University and Ridge logged 37 and 40.2mm rainfall, respectively, between 8.30 am and 5.30pm. Light rain was reported at Lodhi Road and Pusa, while Ayanagar, SPS Mayur Vihar and Pitampura observed only very light rain.

RK Jenamani, senior scientist, IMD, said, “Rain lashed several parts of the capital as monsoon trough is nearby Delhi. However, rain intensity is likely to be reduced from Saturday as light to very light rain is predicted for the next two days.”

The maximum temperature was recorded at 33.9 degrees Celsius, one degree below normal, on Friday. The minimum temperature settled at 27 degrees Celsius. The relative humidity oscillated between 98% and 68%.

The Met department said light to very light rain is expected for the next six days.

Safdarjung has logged 222mm rainfall in July so far as against the monthly normal mark of 210.6mm.

Meanwhile, the air quality of the capital deteriorated from ‘satisfactory’ category on Thursday to ‘moderate’ on Friday. The overall air quality index (AQI) was 140 on Friday. SAFAR, a government agency, said, “For the next three days, the AQI is likely to be within ‘moderate’ or ‘upper end of satisfactory’ due to expected light rain spells.”
