‘Air pollution, public safety’: The big issues Delhi thinks Parliament missed out on

The Winter Session of Parliament concludes on December 19. During this nearly three-week session, there were heated debates on several issues ranging from Vande Mataram to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and voter roll manipulation.

However, several important issues did not receive the attention they deserved, notably the worsening air pollution in Delhi-NCR. Some MPs registered their protest against the government in the House by wearing masks and carrying oxygen cylinders, but no concrete and detailed discussion took place on this issue despite attempts by Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition.

Besides this, people felt that there were other important issues that Parliament didn't discuss. We spoke to people across Delhi to find out which issues they want their MPs to prioritise.

Vijay Kumar, a resident of Delhi, said, “People in the capital do not feel safe following the recent blasts near the Red Fort. Besides this, murders are happening frequently. Students also feel unsafe. MPs must discuss such serious issues in Parliament.”

Meanwhile, some students who had come to Delhi from Bhopal said that as soon as they entered the capital, they faced severe pollution. “We are experiencing sore throats and difficulty breathing due to the pollution,” said one of the students. Another student, meanwhile, noted that the ruling BJP is too entangled in communal politics and needs to move beyond this to “work on important issues related to national interests and the public”.
