Air India plane crash LIVE: Sole survivor of Gatwick-bound flight disaster tells of miracle escape - 'I managed to unbuckle myself... and crawled out'

The British sole survivor of the Air India plane crash has spoken of the horror of watching people “dying in front of my eyes”.

Vishwash Kumar Ramesh said “I still can't believe how I survived” as he spoke from his hospital bed in the Indian city of Ahmedabad on Friday.

The 40-year-old father said the plane felt like it was “stuck in the air” shortly after take-off before lights began flickering green and white - adding: “It suddenly slammed into a building and exploded.”

“I managed to unbuckle myself, used my leg to push through that opening, and crawled out,” he revealed.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner struck a medical college as it crashed in a fireball on Thursday, killing the other 241 people on board.

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Mr Ramesh a day after the plane crash that killed 241 of the 242 people on board, including whole families from London.

What has the CEO of Air India said since the crash?

19:04 , Georgia Bell

Air India CEO Campbell Wilson has said the airline is cooperating with the government and officials with any investigations, and the airline will be "fully transparent".

"Air India's advanced team of nearly 100 caregivers and 40 engineering staff has now arrived in Ahmedabad," Wilson said in a video posted on social media.

"The technical team is now helping at the site and our caregivers are providing support to families. Many more caregivers are travelling to Ahmedabad to provide further support."

Mr Wilson emphasised the airline has set up Friends and Relatives Assistance centres at Ahmedabad, Dehli, Mumbai and Gatwick airports, to help with travel and provide support for affected families.

During a visit to site of the crash on Friday morning, Mr Wilson said he was "deeply moved by the scenes" and expressed concern for the wellbeing of students at the medical hostel hit by the plane.

Mr Wilson added: "We will also cover the medical expenses of those injured."

Air India will approximately £85,000 ($115,000) to families of each person who lost their life in the plane crash.

Search continues for second black box

18:41 , Georgia Bell

One of the black boxes on the crashed Air India flight has been found, but the search continues for the second.

Black boxes record transmissions of flight data and are crucial elements of investigation after a plane crash.

Typically, planes are equipped with two black boxes, which are small but tough electronic data recorders. One black box logs flight data such as altitude and speed, while the other, the cockpit voice recorder, captures audio from the cockpit, including conversations between pilots and any unusual sounds.

The first black box in the Air India crash was found on the rooftop of the building the plane crashed into. The search for the cockpit voice recorder, the second black box, is still ongoing.

Couple killed had already lost pilot son in earlier tragedy

16:36 , Bill Bowkett

A couple who died in the Air India plane crash had already lost their only son in a previous aviation tragedy, a London temple leader has said.

Shri Rajrajeshwar Guruji, who leads the Siddhashram Shakti Centre in Harrow, north-west London, said the couple had been returning from a religious celebration in India when the flight went down.

Their son, a pilot, had died in a crash in France several years earlier."

This couple had gone to India for a religious celebration - they were coming back and now this has happened," Mr Guruji, 53, said.

“After what has happened to their son as well - it's just terrible to think about."

The spiritual leader said he personally knew 20 people who were killed in the crash, all members of the Hindu community who had worshipped at his temple over the years.

Discussing the pain felt among the Hindu community in Harrow, he said: “The only feeling left is sadness. We can't do any more. When we ask people how they are, everyone knows they are sad. There is nothing more to say."

Mr Guruji also confirmed he knew the family of the sole survivor, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, and planned to travel to his hometown of Leicester on Sunday to offer support.

Investigators from the UK & US arrive in India

16:08 , Georgia Bell

UK and US investigators have arrived in India to examine the Air India plane crash, an internal memo from Tata Group - which owns Air India – has revealed.

The memo from the group's chairman, Natarajan Chandrasekaran, states that investigators will "have our full cooperation, and we will be completely transparent about the findings".

The memo says: "Like you, we want to understand what happened. We don't know right now, but we will."

"It is a difficult moment, but we will not retreat from our responsibilities, from doing what is right. We will carry this loss. We will not forget."

Yesterday, Tata Group confirmed it will give 1 crore rupees – the equivalent to £86,000 – to each family who lost someone in the crash.

The sum will also compensate for the medical costs of those injured, and will help rebuild the medical hostel that the plane hit.

Crashed plane flew over 700 times in past year

16:03 , Georgia Bell

The crashed Boeing plane flew more than 700 flights in the year leading up to the disaster, Flightradar24 data reveals.

The Air India plane was 11 years old and typically flew between Mumbai and Dubai, as well from Indian capital New Delhi to European destinations including Milan, Paris and Amsterdam.

The plane flew 25 Ahmedabad-London Gatwick flights over the past two years.

Indian officials announce Black box found

15:12 , Georgia Bell

India's Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu confirms that flight data recorder, known as the black box, from the Air India crashed plane has been found.

Mr Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu says the black box was recovered within 28 hours from the crash site in Ahmedabad by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau.

He said: "This marks an important step forward in the investigation.

"This will significantly aid the inquiry into the incident."

Typically, planes carry two black boxes with small but resilient electronic data recorders. One box records flight data, including altitude and speed. The other records cockpit audio, enabling investigators to hear what pilots are saying and listen out for any unusual noises.

Radiologist killed with family was 'full of joy'

14:02 , Matt Watts

Dr Prateek Joshi, a radiologist killed in the Air India plane crash, was a "wonderful man" who entertained colleagues with stories about "his newly-discovered love of fish and chips and enthusiasm for walking in the Peak District", a colleague who worked closely with him said.

Dr Joshi, a radiologist at Royal Derby Hospital, his wife and three children are presumed dead after the plane crash.

Dr Rajeev Singh, consultant radiologist and clinical director for imaging at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (UHDB), said: "Prateek was full of joy, he was a wonderful man, friend, husband and father, and an exceptional radiologist who was highly respected in his field. He approached everything with a smile, radiated positivity and had a great sense of humour.

"He moved to Derby, from India, in 2021, quickly becoming a beloved colleague.

"He often entertained colleagues with stories about his passions outside of work, including his newly-discovered love of fish and chips and enthusiasm for walking in the Peak District.

"He touched the lives of so many people, both through his clinical work and as a colleague and friend to many.

"It is hard to accept that a man with such a passion for life, and his beautiful young family, have been taken in this way.

"His passing has left a profound void, not only in his professional contributions but in the warmth and spirit that he gave to the world every day."

When news broke yesterday that Air India Flight 171 had crashed shortly after take-off, the world watched in shock and horror.

The Gatwick-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, with 242 people on board, crashed in a huge fireball moments after taking off in the Indian city of Ahmedabad.

Aviation experts say it is nearly impossible to survive a fully-fuelled plane crash into a high-rise building. Yet, one British father remarkably walked away from the disaster, which is believed to have claimed the lives of over 200 people.

"He said 'the hospital and caring has been very good to me, and they are caring well'."

Aviation experts speculate over cause of the crash

10:23 , Megan Howe

Aviation experts have speculated about the possible causes of the crash.

Some have suggested that both engines may have failed- possibly due to a bird strike, as happened in the so-called Miracle on the Hudson in 2009.

Others say it may have been due to the flaps on the aircraft's wings not being set to the correct position for take-off.

Aviation expert Geoffrey Thomas told the BBC that investigators would likely need to examine “a possible error in the cockpit.”

Mr Thomas observed that the aircraft's undercarriage appeared to still be deployed, while the flaps had already been retracted—something he described as “unusual” so soon after takeoff.

“The plane simply sank, it didn’t lurch from one side to the other, showing a possible mechanical problem. It looked as though [...] it was coming into land,” Mr Thomas said.

Images taken after the incident showed part of the plane embedded in the BJ Medical College building.

Air India crash investigations continue

09:38 , Megan Howe

UK officials are being deployed to India to support the investigation, the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) has said.

US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed US teams from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) were also headed to India with support from Boeing and GE Aerospace.

He told reporters it was "way too premature" to ground Boeing 737s in the aftermath of the crash.

"They have to get on the ground and take a look," he said. "People are looking at videos and trying to assess what happened, which is never a strong, smart way to make decisions on what took place."

Fears the number of dead on the ground could rise

08:01 , Megan Howe

The accident marks first major accident for the model, which has been in operation since 2011.

"No one wants to see any kind of aircraft be involved in an accident. And certainly for Boeing, this is a difficult time and they will be very much ready to support the investigation as the manufacturer and aid this part of the process."

Bird strike may have caused Air India plane crash, expert claims

Thursday 12 June 2025 13:29 , Megan Howe

The Air India plane crash may have been caused by a bird strike, a former pilot said.

Saurabh Bhatnagar told Indian news TV channel New Delhi Television LTD the incident appears to involve "multiple bird hits".

He said: "It looks, prima facie, like a case of multiple bird hits wherein both the engines have lost power.

"The take-off was perfect and just, I believe, short of taking the gear up, the aircraft started descending, which can happen only in case the engine loses power or the aircraft stops developing lift.

"Obviously, the investigation will reveal the exact reason."

He added that footage show the plane "came down in a controlled fashion".

Bird strikes are defined as a collision between a bird and an aircraft which is in flight, taking-off or landing.

A large flock of birds entering an aircraft engine can cause power loss.

Efforts to reduce the number of bird strikes include using lights on planes to make them more visible to birds, and making loud noises at airports to scare them away.
