Air bridge discussions with Spain and Portugal offer summer hope for British holidaymakers

Summer holidays to Portugal and Spain could be possible this year with the countries reportedly trying to establish air bridges with the UK.

The scheme would allow allow travellers to fly between countries where the spread of the virus is low without needing to quarantine.

Governments in the UK and Spain understood to be involved in discussions to open air routes between the two countries to avoid the need for a 14-day quarantine for British holidaymakers when they return home.

Travel magazine Preferente has quoted a Madrid spokesperson claiming negotiations have started with the UK government and this has been confirmed by the Foreign Office.

Portugal has been praised for its response to the coronavirus, with 30,788 cases and 1,333 deaths recorded, reports the LiverpoolEcho.

But its tourism-dependent economy has suffered as a result of the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns as governments try to stop the spread of the virus - reports Mirror Online.

In 2019, almost 20 per cent of the 16 million foreign tourists that visited Portugal were British.

News agency Reuters reported that the talks are still in an initial phase, while another said the government is seeking the air corridor both for Portuguese tourists visiting Britain and vice versa.

The tourism sector in Portugal makes up 15 per cent of its GDP, and was one of the main forces behind its recovery following the 2010-14 economic crisis.

It comes as anyone entering Britain from June 8 will be required to self-isolate for 14 days.

The new rules will apply to all returning holidaymakers - but will be reviewed every few weeks.
