Air ambulance lands on M1 near Leeds as biker flown to hospital after crash causes long delays

A motorbike rider was taken to hospital by air ambulance after crashing with a van on the M1 near Leeds.

The M1 Southbound is closed for several hours following the crash on Junction 42 Lofthouse to Junction 41 Wakefield/Morley around 4pm today (Monday).

West Yorkshire Police said the motorcyclist is now in hospital as he was injured after coming off the bike.

A spokesperson for the force said: “Police were called at 4.15pm today to a report of a motorcyclist who was injured after coming off his bike.

“He has been taken to hospital by air ambulance.

“The road was closed for a time to allow for the air ambulance to land, but has since reopened.”

National Highways has advised drivers heading south to use the A1M whole an investigation is being carried out at the scene.

They said: “National Highways is advising drivers that the M1 may remain closed southbound for some time between junction 42 (Lofthouse) and junction 41 (Wakefield / Morley) following a serious incident.

“The carriageway is expected to be shut for several hours because a police-led investigation is still being carried out at the scene as well as the attendance of an air ambulance.”

They added: “Traffic travelling from further afield and heading south are advised to use the A1M.”
