An air ambulance landed near a leisure centre in the valleys today after a "medical emergency".

Paramedics were called to an incident near Ystrad Rhondda sports centre at around lunchtime.

The age of the person and what exactly happened has not yet been confirmed.

However, eyewitnesses described the scene as "worrying" after seeing an air ambulance, a rapid response vehicle and another ambulance arrive at the scene.

One said: "I heard the sound of a helicopter in the sky.

"At first I thought it was flying past, but then it landed on the field right next to the sports centre.

"There was also an ambulance and a first responded at the scene.

"I'm not sure exactly what happened, but I hope that whoever is involved is OK."

The Welsh Ambulance Service confirmed that an incident had taken place on Monday, March 2.

A  spokesman said: "We were called to reports of a medical emergency in the Pentre, area at approximately 12.48pm today.

"We responded with one rapid response vehicle, one emergency ambulance and the Wales Air Ambulance. One patient was conveyed to University of Wales Hospital, Cardiff.”
