Air ambulance lands as motorcyclist seriously injured and main road closed

A motorcyclist in his 60s was airlifted to hospital as a crash closed a major road in Ormskirk this afternoon.

The rider and another man were both hurt when the motorbike crashed with a car, with the driver needing to be cut free.

Emergency services were called to the crash at the junction of Scarth Hill Lane and St Helens Road and Ormskirk Road at around 1.30pm on Tuesday.

Road and air ambulances were sent to the scene, with police closing the A570 between that junction and the Stanley Gate pub, causing significant delays in the surrounding area.

The driver of the car had to be cut free by firefighters before being taken to Southport Hospital for treatment. The rider suffered serious leg and arm injuries and was taken to Aintree Hospital via air ambulance.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 1:32pm on 18th May, two fire engines from Ormskirk and Skelmersdale attended an incident on Scarth Hill Lane, Ormskirk.

"The road traffic collision involved one car and one motorcycle.

"Firefighters used holmatro cutting equipment and a trauma kit to extricate one casualty from the car who was then transferred to hospital by ambulance.

"One further casualty from the motorcycle was transferred to hospital by air ambulance. Crews were at the scene for two hours.
