Air ambulance called to serious crash on A697 as Northumberland road remains closed

The air ambulance has been called to a serious crash on a Northumberland road.

Two cars were involved in the collision on the A697 just before 11am on Saturday and a number of emergency services rushed to the scene.

One person has been taken to hospital and the road remains closed at Wheldon Bank in both directions.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 10.56am to a road traffic collision on the A697.

"We dispatched two double crewed ambulances, a crew from our Hazardous Area Response Team, a specialist paramedic, a community paramedic, and officer and requested support from the air ambulance.

"We had six resources in total.

"One patient was transported by road to the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital."

The A697 is expected to stay closed between the B6344 (Longframlington) and The Linden Tree pub turn off (Longhorsley) for some time and emergency services remain in the area.

Traffic is slow on the A1 north of Causey Park as drivers avoid the closed route.
