Air ambulance called to M5 serious multi-vehicle collision

A stretch of the M5 has been closed after a serious multi-vehicle crash saw the air ambulance called out.

Police are currently at the scene of incident which has seen the M5 closed southbound in Worcestershire.

The crash involved four cars, a lorry and a motorbike. and is causing heavy traffic in the area while a relief plan is put in place.

The air ambulance was called earlier and was at the scene for around 30 minutes.

Normal traffic conditions are expected to resume at 10pm.

West Mercia Police's Operations Patrol Unit said on Twitter: "Please avoid the area if possible. A relief plan is in place to move stuck traffic.

"DO NOT drive the wrong way down the carriageway or slip roads, you are risking further accidents and delaying the relief plan being put into effect."

The crash happened at around 5:45pm this evening and involved a lorry, a van and four cars and a motorbike involved between Junction 5 A38 (Droitwich) and Junction 6 A4538 Pershore Lane (Worcester).

Traffic site Inrix said: "At around 17:45 all traffic was held and the road was confirmed closed at around 18:15. Ten minutes later all traffic was also held Northbound for around half an hour for air ambulance.

"There is trapped traffic within the closure."
