Air ambulance called and man taken to hospital after collapsing in the West End of Newcastle

A man has been taken to hospital after collapsing in the street in Newcastle's West End.

Emergency services were called to Westgate Road near Todds Nook at around 7pm on Friday to reports of an unresponsive man in the middle of the road.

Two paramedic crews and the Great North Air Ambulance were dispatched to the scene.

The man was seen being given CPR and oxygen in the road by paramedics and a doctor.

He has been taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle by road with his condition unknown at this stage.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called at 7.03pm on Friday to a man who had collapsed on Westgate Road.

"We dispatched two paramedic crews and also requested assistance from the Great North Air Ambulance.

"We transported the patient to the RVI by road ambulance."
