Air ambulance called after tombstoner jumps 200ft from cliff

A man who jumped 200 feet into the sea had to be airlifted to hospital after dislocating his shoulder on Wednesday.

Beachgoers at Durdle Door in Dorset watched as the unnamed tombstoner plummeted from the top of the famous limestone arch and initially failed to resurface.

The coastguard rescued the man before an air ambulance was called to the packed beach.

He was then taken to Dorset County Hospital for further treatment, reports the Mirror.

A video shows the moment the thrillseeker jumped from the cliff as some onlookers cheered.

But screams were then heard as it became clear that the man was injured.

Speaking to The Sun, witness Khawar Khawaja said: “It was really scary to watch, we didn’t know if he was going to come back up at all or how badly he had injured himself."

He added that his wife initially feared that the man was attempting to take his own life.

Mr Khawaja said onlookers called the emergency services even before the man jumped due to how high he was.

The practice of jumping from great heights into water – known as tombstoning – has taken the lives of at least 20 people in the UK since 2005.

Similar incidents in which the air ambulance had to be summoned to Durdle Door due to tombstoners made national headlines last year.
