Air Ambulance attends major incident involving overturned crane

Emergency services are currently at the scene of an overturned crane in Co Derry.

The incident involved a mobile crane in the Priory Lane area of Dungiven shortly after 1pm on Wednesday.

The Northern Ireland Fire Service said they have seven fire crews and a Specialist Rescue Team at the scene of the incident.

Northern Ireland Ambulance Service dispatched one emergency crew and one Hazard Area Response Team Officer to the scene.

The Charity Air Ambulance with HEMS team on board were also tasked to the incident.

It is understood that one man is trapped inside the crane with specialist lifting gear currently in operation to remove the individual to safety.

The incident is ongoing.

Local councillor for area, Sean McGlinchey, who visited the scene, said: "Our thoughts are with the man at this time and we hope that he will be okay.

"It is not clear how the incident occurred at this stage.

"The patch of land that the crane overturned on is situated on sand and it can be quite tricky to do work on.

"The crane was there to work on the Drumahoe and Dungiven bypass that is part of the new A6 road.

"I understand that the man is conscious and is in communication with the emergency services."
