Aintree weather forecast: Is it going to rain on Grand National day?

All eyes will be on Aintree for Britain's biggest horse race today - but will heavy rain or strong winds spoil the final day of the extravaganza?

Wet and windy conditions have battered much of the country in recent days as April kicks off with a spell of chilly weather, showers and even snow in the north.

The three-day festival got off to a rainy start on Friday but racegoers enjoyed mostly pleasant conditions at Aintree at yesterday's Ladies Day.

And the latest forecast says the racecourse in Liverpool will avoid rain during today's Grand National as the UK sees an east/west weather divide this weekend.

UK weather forecast: 16C highs this weekend before 'Beast from the East returns'

The temperature at Aintree could peak at 14C during intervals of sun and cloud.

The Met Office is predicting a dry and bright day with sunny spells throughout the afternoon's races including the Grand National, which gets under way just after 5pm.

It said: "It will be a dry and crisp start to the day, with plenty of sunshine developing.

"The wind will stay light and it will feel pleasant in the sunshine.

"Turning cloudier from the east later in the day.

"Maximum temperature 14C."

The temperature will peak close to the mid-teens at about 4pm.

Easterly winds will gust to about 20mph in the morning before easing to about 10mph in the afternoon.

The east/west divide will see cloudy and chilly conditions in the east, and dry and bright conditions in the west.

For those who are sticking around through the evening, low cloud and hill fog will gradually spread west with the odd spot of drizzle possible over eastern hills, the Met Office said.

A patchy frost is possible as the temperature drops to about 2C overnight.

First held in 1839, the Grand National is the most lucrative jump race in Europe with £1million in total prize money.
