NEW YORK — The hit Temptations musical “Ain’t Too Proud” has become Broadway’s latest COVID-19 casualty.
Producers of the Tony Award-winning show announced Tuesday that the jukebox musical, which opened in March 2019, will close for good next month.
“Come groove with us one last time on Broadway!” read a post on the show’s Twitter account. “The Tony-winning Ain’t Too Proud will play its final performance on Broadway January 16, 2022. Don’t miss your chance to see us in our final three weeks.”
“Ain’t Too Proud,” closed in March 2020 when Broadway went dark, and reopened on Oct. 16, but has been on pause at the Imperial Theatre since Dec. 15 because of breakthrough COVID-19 cases.
The show’s narrative was from the perspective of Otis Williams, the last surviving original member of the trailblazing Motown supergroup. Temptations hits like “My Girl,” “Just My Imagination,” “Get Ready,” “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” are used to tell the singers’ story.
Written by Dominique Morriseau, a MacArthur Fellowship recipient and directed by two-time Tony Award winner Des MacAnuff, the show stars Nik Walker, James Harkness, Jawan M. Jackson, Matt Manuel and Jelani Remy.
The musical was nominated for 12 Tony Awards and won one for choreography in 2019.
“Jagged Little Pill,” “Waitress” and the play “Thoughts of a Colored Man” announced last week that they will also be closing for good.
