Aiden McGeady starts for Sunderland Under-23's against Crystal Palace

Aiden McGeady started for Sunderland's under 23's this afternoon against Crystal Palace.

The Republic of Ireland international has been frozen out of the senior team after a fallout with manager Phil Parkinson last season.

McGeady spent the latter part of last season on loan at Charlton Athletic and had looked like he would leave the Stadium of Light this summer.

However, a move wouldn't transpire and manager Parkinson said that McGeady's involvement in first team proceedings would limit the chances of younger members of the squad, namely Jack Diamond, Elliot Embleton and Dan Niel.

The latter of whom starts alongside McGeady this afternoon. It's sparked wide debate online among fans.

Could McGeady make an appearance for the first team this season, or is he simply gaining match fitness in a bid to attract attention from clubs in the January transfer window?

A number of fans believe that McGeady should be featuring given a lack of cutting edge in recent weeks.

Sunderland XI: Patterson, Wearne, Beaumont, Wilding, Taylor, Diamond, Neil, Curry, McGeady, Steels

Subs: Dunne, Richardson, Trialist, Wombwell, Hackett.
