Aiden McGeady on facing 'best in the world' Lionel Messi in the Champions League

Aiden McGeady has recalled coming up against Lionel Messi on the season he established himself as one of the world's best players.

The Republic of Ireland International was part of the Celtic side that were beaten 3-2 by Barcelona at Parkhead with Messi scoring twice.

Celtic would eventually be knocked out of the competition after losing 4-2 on aggregate.

Speaking to the Open Goal podcast, McGeady said Messi is the best player he has ever come up against.

He said: "On the day he was brilliant. I've played against him [Messi] and Ronaldo a few times.

"In the last 16 of the Champions League at Parkhead when Messi scored two. That was when people were saying he was on the cusp of being the best player in the world.

"He was on my side as well. He'd get the ball and come inside and play a pass right, you'd be looking and the ball would go back and he'd be over there.

"The ball was like bang, bang, bang and the ball would come back. He play a one touch pass and when you'd look to see where he'd gone he was over there.

"He just stops but in that team Messi doesn't need to work back.

"To be fair he played on the right that day as well. They have other players to do that work. "
