Aidan O'Mahony reckons Bernard Brogan could come back into Dublin reckoning for replay

Bernard Brogan could well come back into the reckoning for Dublin, says Aidan O’Mahony.

The former Kerry defender also says he can see Jonny Cooper being assigned to mark David Clifford again in the All-Ireland final replay, despite the Dublin defender struggling in last Sunday’s game and eventually being sent off.

He said: “He’s been one of your best man-markers for years. He hasn’t lost his pace overnight or anything and maybe he just needs a bit of game time.

“The last day he was very close to his man, that’s the one good thing, and he plays on the line.

“Eoin Murchan came on and played very well, and when Tommy [Walsh] came on James [McCarthy] went back and played full-back which probably played into Kerry’s hands as well.

“So I would think if I was a corner back or a full-back I would want to go back on that player as well to make amends, but who knows. Jim [Gavin] knows better than I do,” said O’Mahony, speaking at the launch of Ireland Active’s National Fitness Day, which takes place on September 26.

At 35, Bernard Brogan’s Dublin career appeared to petering out to a low-key conclusion having featured very sparingly this year though O’Mahony feels there may be a last hurrah for him tomorrow week.

“I think you'll see Bernard Brogan back on the panel. The last day Jim Gavin was in bonus territory because you look at Con O'Callaghan, Kilkenny and Mannion, I thought Mannion for me got on a lot of ball despite people saying he had a quiet game.

“Con O'Callaghan looked dangerous every time he got on the ball as well and Ciarán Kilkenny moved out near the middle in the second half so he'd probably be expecting more from those lads.

“I think Bernard Brogan will be back and there might even be a shout for Eoghan O’Gara.

“He’s like a Tommy Walsh kind of figure as well in that he’s robust and he’s a player you can use if you want to go direct like. There were a lot of plots and subplots about the starting teams the last day, and I think the next day as well, I have no doubt they are fellas that will be looked at.”

All-Ireland winning Kerry footballer Aidan O’Mahony has teamed up with Ireland Active to launch National Fitness Day 2019. On this year’s National Fitness Day (26 September 2019), Ireland Active will host the second Docklands Fitfest as part of Dublin City Council’s Dublin Sportfest. National Fitness Day is supported by Sport Ireland, Healthy Ireland and the European Commission, with a common goal of promoting the benefits of physical activity. In celebration of National Fitness Day, Fitbit will be giving away free Fitbit devices as part of the initiative in participating leisure centres, workplaces and schools across the country.
