Aidan O'Mahony hits out at Sean Cavanagh for 'cheap shot' at Mickey Harte

Aidan O'Mahony has hit out at Sean Cavanagh for what he says was a “cheap shot” at Mickey Harte.

O’Mahony also took umbrage with Cavanagh’s comments on Kerry supporters and, clearly, he isn’t a fan of the former Tyrone star’s punditry having commented on social media lately that “this guy amazes me with his analysis”.

After Kerry beat Tyrone in a qualifier tie in Killarney in 2012, Kerry fans applauded the opposition team and management as they embarked the team bus, something which Cavanagh described as “a wee bit patronising”.

Former Kerry defender O’Mahony said: “Myself and Owen Mulligan get on great and we've massive respect (for each other) and I've massive respect for all those guys.

“I marked Stephen O'Neill and all these guys and Sean Cavanagh and they were the greatest guys that ever put on a jersey for Tyrone.

“I can remember he made a comment that the Kerry crowd were patronising, they were clapping them on the bus. I remember that day.

“Mickey Harte had gone through so much grief that time that there was so much respect for him.”

After Tyrone’s recent All-Ireland semi-final defeat to Kerry, Sunday Game pundit Cavanagh suggested that it was time for Harte to move on as manager.

O’Mahony added: “I just thought for a guy that Mickey Harte made, and I've no problem saying that - I'd say it about myself and Jack O'Connor and Paidi O Sé who brought me in first.

“You look back on these guys and I wouldn't cut the legs off them because they made me who I am today.

“They gave me the jersey to put on my back and then made me who I am. You could say your club did and everything else but these guys believed in you.

“I've met Mickey Harte several times and he caused us plenty of heartache in 2005, 2008 but I've massive respect for him.

“I just think for a player to cut the legs off him so easily, you seen Owen Mulligan came out about it the last day as well. I just think it was a bit of a cheap shot.”
