Aidan O'Mahony hits back at 'silly' Sean Kavanagh Kerry comments

Aidan O'Mahony has hit back at Sean Cavanagh’s “silly” comments on Kerry.

Speaking on the Sunday Game following Kerry’s fraught Munster final win over Cork on Saturday, the former Tyrone star suggested that they wouldn’t be in the last eight right now if they were competing in any of the other three provinces.

Ex-Kerry defender O’Mahony feels that Cavanagh was merely looking for attention.

He said: “I don't believe what Sean said at all. Tyrone haven't set the Championship alight either have they?

“Kerry were in a National League final on merit. I reckon Sean might be looking for a few headlines putting out a quote like that if I'm honest.

“Kerry won't be reading too much into that either. Even if Kerry were a bit poor against Cork, they are still winning. It's an utter throwaway comment from Sean.

“I wouldn't give it a second thought anyway, it was a bit silly. Whatever province you put Kerry in, they'd get to the final,” he told Paddy Power News.

O’Mahony sees huge scope for improvement in Kerry after Cork hit them for three goals but ranks them alongside Mayo and behind Donegal in the race to topple Dublin.

He added: “I warned people at the start of the season that Donegal are dark horses. They look to be the one team that can give Dublin problems.

“Stephen Rochford is a huge addition for them as well. Donegal have been playing this system for a good few years now.

“They are very exciting to watch with Jamie Brennan and Ryan McHugh flying around the place. They are definitely right up there.

“On the flip side, if Kerry get their formation right, they'll be good enough for any team. I have Kerry in the number three slot on a par with Mayo.

“The win in Down was impressive from Mayo, Newry is never an easy place to go. Mayo love making things harder on themselves, they are like journeymen who love being on the road.

“They always seem to get in the back door. The Super 8s will rank teams very quick though and by the time we get to the semi-finals we'll know where we stand.”
