Aidan O'Brien-trained 2,000 Guineas runner-up Wichita dies in Australia following leg injury

The Aidan O'Brien-trained and this year 2,000 Guineas runner-up Wichita has died in Australia after suffering a leg injury.

The three-year-old colt suffered a fracture during track work at Werribee earlier this month and had to be put down after sustaining another injury while recovering from surgery.

A statement from Racing Victoria said: "The connections of the Aidan O’Brien trained Wichita have advised Racing Victoria (RV) that the horse sustained a further injury to its right hind leg while rehabilitating at Macedon Lodge from recent surgery.

"Acting on the advice of stable veterinarians, the connections advise that Wichita was humanely euthanised on Friday, 23 October as a result of the complications encountered in its recovery.

"Wichita has been transported to the University of Melbourne Equine Centre in Werribee where a post mortem will be conducted.

"RV extends its condolences to the owners of the horse, trainer Aidan O’Brien, his stable staff and all who cared for the horse and are greatly saddened by their loss."

Wichita finished just behind Kameko in a brilliant renewal of this season's first classic at Newmarket back in June when ridden by Frankie Dettori.

He was last seen when beating One Master by a short head in the bet365 Park Stakes at Doncaster last month, again under Dettori.

Wichita was set to run in the Cantala Stakes at Flemington this coming Saturday.
