AICC Manipur in charge rushes to Imphal to assess situation

IMPHAL: A day after Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Govindas Konthoujam resigned from his post, AICC in charge (Manipur) Bhakta Charan Das airdashed to Imphal on Wednesday to assess the situation and reorganise the party structure.

Bhakta said his visit is to revamp the party ahead of the ensuing assembly polls due early next year.

On the other hand, Congress is waiting anxiously for the Supreme Court’s verdict on the disqualification case of 12 MLAs of the ruling BJP-led coalition government to be announced on July 26. If the apex court disqualifies the 12 MLAs, BJP will be reduced to a minority.

Though the assembly has 60 members, the current strength in the house is 54 as 3 BJP leaders resigned and as many Congress MLAs were disqualified by the Speaker in the 2019 political crisis.

“I’m going to discuss every aspect with the MLAs and about the party and the organisation. The high command is very serious on such kind of issue (Govindas’s resignation). The indiscipline cannot be tolerated. The PCC president post is the most responsible post …”, Bhakta added. Later the Congress leader chaired a meeting attended by CLP leader and former chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh, senior MLAs and MPCC leaders.

MPCC vice-president and senior legislator K Meghachandra said all problems in the party would be sorted out in the next 2/3 days. He added that Govindas’s resignation is his individual matter and it has nothing to do with the party and the organisation.
