AIB suspends introduction of contactless fee amid coronavirus crisis

AIB is putting the brakes on plans to introduce a contactless fee in light of the coronavirus outbreak.

The bank had originally planned to introduce 1c charges for customers making contactless payments from May 30, 2020.

A quarterly maintenance fee of €4.50 for current accounts was also planned.

The bank also said it will continue to support customers during the outbreak.

A spokesman said: "With the evolving COVID-19 situation we are aware that many businesses and households are facing disruption.

"Our aim is to continue to support you through this situation and we encourage you to contact us as soon as possible if you need advice or support.

"We will remain flexible in our response as the situation evolves and we will keep you updated on the range of tailored solutions for both our business and personal customers."

The decision to bring in the new fees was originally announced on Tuesday, and drew a backlash on social media, especially on Twitter.

One user said: "AIB should be ashamed & price gouging or in this case “fees” should be banned at a time of crisis."

Another added: "By forcing people back into using cash with their transaction fees, is the @AIB helping? Coins and cash are disease vectors."
