AI-Powered Game Clones Are Appearing Within Days
The issue gained widespread attention after indie developer Freya Holmér shared a 50-second video demonstrating a unique puzzle game concept inspired by Tetris. The prototype featured a rotating game board that changes orientation as players place blocks, attracting thousands of views on social media.
According to a report by Nicole Carpenter of 404 Media, AI-generated versions of the concept began appearing online just days after the video was posted.
Shortly afterward, several similar games reached digital storefronts, illustrating how quickly publicly shared ideas can now be replicated using AI-assisted development tools.
AI Coding Tools Make Game Development Faster
Reports from 404 Media indicate that developers are increasingly relying on AI coding assistants such as Claude to generate playable games from existing concepts with minimal manual programming.
One developer, Charlie Greenman, acknowledged recreating Holmér's gameplay idea after seeing it on social media. Using AI prompts and roughly one day of development, he released a game called "Rotris." Greenman argued that his version was a separate creation and said he did not believe it crossed ethical boundaries.
For some fans, the era of generative AI created a new trend where inspiration ends, and imitation begins.
Indie Developers Face Growing Competition
Game clones have existed for decades, but AI has dramatically accelerated the process.
Many AI-generated games may lack the polish and creativity of the originals, yet they often appear on digital storefronts at low prices or even for free. This makes it more difficult for independent developers to stand out in increasingly crowded marketplaces.
For smaller studios with limited marketing budgets, a flood of inexpensive AI-generated alternatives can reduce visibility and impact potential sales before the original game is even released.
