AHMEDABAD: A woman from Shahibaug lost Rs 13,962 to cybercrooks when she opted to buy a top worth Rs 269 from a shopping portal in November last year. After the accused, who spent Rs 13,326 of 13,962, was caught by Jharkhand police in various cases of cyber frauds, the woman got to know who took her money and filed an FIR with Madhavpura police of the city.
Dhyani Patel, 21, a fourth-semester student of LD Engineering College and a resident of Vaibhav Apartment in Shahibaug, on November 7, 2020, had seen an advertisement of a portal named ‘Style Guru’ selling women’s clothes.
She opened the shopping portal and bought a top worth Rs 269 for which she paid through the Google Pay app.
On November 8, 2020, she realized that she had opted for a wrong size, so she wanted to change the order. She searched the customer care number of the shopping portal and found one on which she called and told a customer care executive to change her order.
The man, who was actually a cybercrook, told her that she had to cancel the earlier order after which she would get the money back and she could place a new order.
Following his advice, Patel cancelled the order and the man told her to open the Google Pay app. After she opened the app, the man told her to send a four-digit OTP telling her that she would get her money back through such a procedure only.
She followed his commands after which Rs 9,141 were debited from her bank account. The man again sought an OTP from her and she ended up losing Rs 4,821 more from her bank account.
Patel told the man that the money was withdrawn from her account. Hearing this, the man disconnected her cellphone and went incommunicado.
Patel had then blocked her bank account and filed a complaint with National Cyber Crime reporting portal.
