Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation officer duped of Rs 4 lakh by cybercrooks sans PIN

AHMEDABAD: A class 2 AMC official lost Rs 4 lakh to cybercrooks even though he had not shared passwords or banking details with anyone.

Tulsidas Rathwa, 57, the office superintendent with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, mentioned in the FIR that he has a credit card of a private bank which was issued in November 2021. Rathwa, a resident of Vande Matram township in Gota, told the cops that he was at his home on January 26. At that time, he suddenly began receiving messages about various transactions from his credit card.

“One of the messages from the bank stated that Rs 3.88 lakh payment was due on my credit card and I had to pay a minimum of Rs 19,412,” Rathwa said in the FIR. Rathwa said: “I had never used that credit card. I had not even generated its PIN.”

Rathwa sought the credit card statement and found that the money was debited in four transactions at around 12.20am on December 16, 2021.

Rathwa had called up police control room on January 26 and got a ticket number for his complaint. His complaint was finally converted to an FIR around six months later.

Sola police registered a complaint of breach of trust under the IPC along with other charges of the Information Technology Act against some unknown persons.

An officer of Sola police said: “The cybercrooks might had got a remote access to Rathwa’s phone by fraudulently downloading an app, like AnyDesk. There is also a probability that the crooks might have hacked the card details from the bank and siphoned off the money,” said the police officer.
