Ahmedabad man held for his social media posts

AHMEDABAD: A 36-year-old man from the Rakhial area of the city was booked by the Cybercrime police on Saturday for his allegedly inciting post in a bid to protest the remarks of the former BJP spokesperson, Nupur Sharma.

According to the FIR, the accused Irshad Ansari, a resident of Lotus Residency near Ajit Mill Crossroads, allegedly justified violence which took place in Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand in his social media posts on June 10 night.

Wireless police sub-inspector of Cybercrime police K K Modi said in his FIR that he along with other cops were monitoring the social media during which he came across Ansari’s post.

“In his post on Facebook, Ansari had allegedly said that the people from Ranchi and Uttar Pradesh had showed their devotion towards the Prophet and the people from Ahmedabad should be ashamed of doing nothing,” mentioned the FIR.

The FIR also added that Ansari claimed in another post that the cops shot at protesters in Ranchi in which 18 youths suffered injuries and two of them died.

In a WhatsApp group named Ansari Ekta Sangathan, Ansari had supported the protest against Nupur Sharma and shared multiple pictures of the people gathering in protest in Mirzapur on June 10.

The FIR claimed, “Ansari’s posts provoked one community members to commit offence against another community members and shared posts which may incite the sentiments and instil hatred between the two communities.”

The police registered a complaint under IPC 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot — if rioting be committed — if not committed) along with the charges of breaching public tranquillity and peace, against Ansari, who runs a garment factory in Rakhial.
