Ahmedabad: 1,240 construction workers died on job in 14 years

AHMEDABAD: As April 28 was marked as the International Workers’ Memorial Day, a city-based NGO collated the details of deaths and injuries to the workers based on police reports.

Vipul Pandya, general secretary of Construction Workers’ Association, said that they had filed RTIs to various district and city police forces to get details. “From 2008 to 2021, according to figures collated, 1,687 workers either died or sustained injuries.

It includes 1,240 deaths. The figures are not complete, as we are yet to get details from several districts,” he said. Pandya added that the young workers are often victims of workplace disasters, and majority of the deaths took place due to fall, landslide, electric shock, among others.

Most of the victims were from Dahod and Panchmahal in Gujarat, Jhabua in Madhya Pradesh, and Banswara and Dungarpur in Rajasthan.

The officials said that the existing laws are not followed in letter and spirit. For example, till 2021 only 174 of the descendants or families of the deceased had received Rs 3 lakh compensation.
