Drug dealer's rant after being caught with drugs in Northumberland on New Year's Eve

A serial drug dealer caught up his old tricks on New Years' Eve after being pulled over for a routine driver check responded by saying "ahh f***".

Robert Young was stopped on suspicion of a driving matter but police found drugs in his Audi A4.

Then when the home he was staying at was checked, thousands of pounds worth of heroin, MDMA and amphetamine were discovered.

Newcastle Crown Court heard it is the fourth offence of peddling class A drugs Young has committed and his tenth conviction for supplying class B narcotics.

It was around 5.30pm on December 31 last year that police on patrol in Hawthorn Road, Ashington, Northumberland saw a black Audi being driven by Young.

There was a suspicion a driving offence may be taking place and officers indicated for him to pull over.

Jessica Slaughter, prosecuting, said: "An officer approached the driver and spoke to Robert Young and his response was 'ahh f***'.

"The officers searched him and found cash on him and they found, in the central console, a bag of white powder. A further search tool place and £410 cash was under the visor on the driver's side.

"There were further drugs found in the central console arm rest."

In the house, on Hawthorn Road, Ashington, there was 197g of heroin, more than 900 MDMA tablets and 1.5 kilos of amphetamine. There were also digital scales.

The court heard the drugs were worth up to around £18,000 at "mid-chain level" but significantly more on the streets when cut.

Young has 74 previous convictions, including 20 drugs offences.

Miss Slaughter said: "These are his third and fourth convictions for possession with intent to supply Class A and his tenth offence for possession with intent to supply class B.

Young, 40, of Birkshaw Walk, West Denton, Newcastle, pleaded guilty to three counts of possessing drugs with intent to supply. He was jailed for four years and four months by Judge Robert Spragg.

John Snowdon, 35, of Hawthorn Road, Ashington, who Young was living with at the time, pleaded guilty to permitting his premises to be used for the supply of drugs and possession amphetamine.

He was given nine months suspended for 18 months with a four month curfew between 8pm and 6am.

Robin Patton, for Young, said: "He has always been at pains to point out he is to blame for his friend, John Snowdon, becoming involved. He says he has not profited and is not part of the exercise.

"The people in the position of the defendant are the people who are there, effectively, as a shield to those making the real money.

"He is trying to address the habit that has brought him before the courts on a number of occasions.

"He was trying to repay debts in a way that has put him before the courts before and he found himself living with Mr Snowdon in difficult circumstances."

The court heard he has a stable relationship and is using his time in custody wisely.

Jonathan Walker, for Snowdon, agreed with a comment that it was "blindingly obvious whose gig this was".

The court heard Snowdon became involved through naivety, he lives with his teenage son and has anxiety and depression.
