Agony for Jack Ross as Sunderland suffer penalty misery in Checkatrade Trophy final

Sunderland suffered a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat in the Checkatrade Trophy Final as Portsmouth claimed glory at Wembley.

With the sides locked at 2-2 after extra-time, Pompey triumphed 5-4 on spot kicks in a contest that featured a strong Scottish contingent on the pitch and in the dugout.

Former St Mirren manager Jack Ross fielded Scotland internationals Jon McLaughlin and Lewis Morgan while Perthshire-born Craig McGillivray was the shoot-out hero in goal for Portsmouth.

Former Celtic winger and Ireland star Aiden McGeady bagged two goals for the Black Cats in a pulsating contest at England's national stadium.

He gave the Wearside outfit the lead before Nathan Thompson's 82nd minute equaliser forced extra-time.

Jamal Lowe looked to have won it for Pompey with 114 minutes only the clock but McGeady popped up again to send the tie to penalties.

He scored Sunderland 's first penalty but a miss from skipper Lee Cattermole proved decisive and the Fratton Park side emerged victorious.

Ross' side remain in contention to win promotion to the Championship following his move from Paisley last summer.
