Agonising moment GP reaches million pound question on Who Wants to Be A Millionaire has Glasgow gripped

A retired Glasgow GP came one step away from winning the £1 million top prize on tonight's episode of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.

Andrew Townsley, who worked at Newhills Medical Practice in Easterhouse, could have become the sixth contestant to ever win the maximum prize on the ITV show.

The Glasgow Uni graduate correctly answered 13 questions before host Jeremy Clarkson asked him the final £1 million question - about the history of motor sport.

Andrew opted to use his Phone A Friend lifeline to call pal Aisla, but sadly she couldn't help him.

The retired GP then opted to take the £500,000 he had already won and head home.

But not before sharing what he would've guessed - which unbelievably turned out to the the correct answer.

Ahead of the broadcast of his game, Andrew, who has progressive MS and requires the use of a wheelchair, said: "It felt great to be there, if a bit surreal to be honest.

"As I was progressing in the hot seat, all I could think about was this is all going very quickly!

"When you apply to be on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? you always dream that you'd have the opportunity to answer that million pound question...

"I knew winning a large sum of money would make my life a lot more comfortable."
