Agnipath protest: NSUI district president, SP man among 5 held

MEERUT: Police in Saharanpur arrested NSUI district president, ex-panchayat member of Samajwadi Party and three others-- affiliated to some political parties -- for provoking 'Agnipath' protesters. Police claimed that those arrested were 'not army aspirants' and were found participating in the protest.

During interrogation, it was found that all of them are above 25 years of age and none of them is preparing for police or army recruitment, alleged police.

The arrested include district president of National Student Union of India (Saharanpur) Parag Panwar, who was arrested on Saturday evening for protesting with army aspirants at the district collectorate. Police also arrested Sandeep Singh, former zila panchayat member of Samajwadi Party. Three others -- Mohit Chaudhary, Saurabh Kumar and Uday Singh -- who also have some affiliation with 'political parties' were arrested. "These people were provoking the army aspirants to protest. All of them are affiliated to some political parties. Such activities will not be tolerated," said SSP Saharanpur Akash Tomar.

Refuting the police claims that the NSUI president was 'provoking' protesters, Congress district president Chaudhary Muzaffar Ali said Parag had gone to collect his domicile certificate from the DM office where the protesting students urged him to join their protest.
