'Aggressive' dog tasered by police and park evacuated after attack on woman

An "aggressive" dog has been tasered by police after it attacked a woman, causing a park to be evacuated.

Police were scrambled to the scene in Gorton Park, in Manchester, around 10.30am on Sunday following reports of a dog attack.

Officers at the scene were forced to taser the dog to subdue it.

The woman was rushed to hospital by attending ambulance services and she was treated for her injuries, which were not thought to be life-threatening or life-altering.

The park was evacuated, and a scene remains in place while officers conduct their enquiries.

Chief Inspector Luke Breakspear the Force Duty Officer of Greater Manchester Police said the dog had been "aggressive" when officers arrived at the scene.

"Their absolute priority was to ensure the safety of the victim and other nearby members of the public," he said.

“The incident will obviously cause some distress to those who were at the scene, but I would like to offer reassurance that it was dealt with swiftly and thankfully the woman’s injuries are not more grievous."

Inspector Breakspear said police were continuing to carry out inquiries to understand the full circumstances surrounding the attack.

Anyone with footage of the incident was asked to share it with police.

Just last week The Mirror reported on an attempted dog attack in Croydon, south London, that caused a four-year-old girl to run out onto a busy road.

Emerald Fitzgerald said the pitbull "went to bite" her daughter Harper, "narrowly missing her ear" before the little girl fled due to her reduced awareness of danger.

The mum was taking her daughter and son, two, out for lunch when the attack happened in Croydon, south London, on Friday afternoon.

Emerald said her son was closer to the dog in his pushchair and as she tried to protect him, Harper instinctively ran, reports MyLondon.

She said: "It was so unexpected....it completely caught me off guard.

"I honestly thought that was the last time I was gonna see my daughter...

Emerald said that while such an attack would be difficult for most people to cope with, the fact that her daughter is autistic made the situation worse.

Emerald was planning to give a police statement over the attack.
