'Aggressive' armed man turns ill after trying to flee with weapon following dangerous driving Garda hunt in Dublin City

An "aggressive" armed young man was taken ill after trying to flee Gardai who caught him driving dangerously and brandishing a weapon in Dublin City this morning.

Pearse Street officers on patrol after 6am spotted the man, in his 20s, driving erratically along the Quays.

The vehicle he was in came to an abrupt stop on Wellington Quay and the man burst out the door and attempted to flee the scene.

Gardai managed to stop him but he began to act aggressively towards the arresting officers who found a weapon in his possession during the resistance.

And in a dramatic twist, shortly after the successful move the young man was taken ill and an ambulance was called to rush him to hospital.

Investigations are ongoing with Gardai appealing for any witnesses who may have came across the vehicle in the area at that time to come forward.

A Garda spokesman said: "At approximately 6:20am, Gardaí in Pearse Street observed a male engaged in an incident of dangerous driving.

"The vehicle came to a stop on Wellington quay and the male attempted to flee the scene. The man (20s) was apprehended, acted in an aggressive manner towards arresting Gardaí and was found to be in possession of a weapon.

He added: "During the course of his arrest the male was taken ill. Ambulance services attended the scene and took male to hospital. Enquiries are ongoing."
