Agent of Leeds United player admits his client took a pay cut

Most professional footballers would love the chance to work with an esteemed coach such as Marcelo Bielsa.

And to do so at such a young age presents players with an opportunity to learn from one of the most respected coaches in world football.

That is exactly what happened in the case of young goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

The 20-year-old arrived at Elland Road at the start of the campaign on loan from French side Lorient.

He certainly had to bide his time and it wasn't until January that he made his first appearance for Bielsa's side.

Despite being on the end of a 1-0 defeat in the FA Cup at Arsenal, the young French stopper won plenty of plaudits.

Following Kiko Casilla's eight-match ban Meslier was again called upon and indeed he kept two clean sheets against Hull and Huddersfield before the coronavirus outbreak led to the current suspension of matches.

Sport Witness report that Meslier is loving life at Elland Road and happily agreed to a wage deferral, along with his colleagues, in light of the pandemic.

The player's agent Yvon Pouliquen, speaking with French newspaper Ouest-France, said: “The period is not about talking about money, but I can say that Illan accepted a cut in wages in relation to the current situation.

"Illan is also confined, he remained in England. But don’t worry, we sent him a bike to train, weight training equipment etc. He is followed daily by the goalkeeping coach, who does not let him go!”

According to his agent, Meslier is chomping at the bit to resume action when it is safe to do so.

Pouliquen added: “It is necessary to resume as soon as possible, but of course when all the conditions are met for the protection of the players and people around.

“You have to go to the end, even if you have to play until August.

"You would speed up the next season, and then the players like to play."
