Agent David Meyler - Sunderland midfielder reveals his role in convincing Jordan Willis to sign

Former Sunderland midfielder David Meyler has revealed he recommended Sunderland to new signing Jordan Willis.

The former Coventry City defender and captain has signed a two-year deal with the Black Cats after leaving the Sky Blues on a free transfer this summer.

And the 24-year-old was widely expected to move to a Championship club, with six second tier sides in total credited with interest.

But putting his faith in the rebuilding job ongoing at the Stadium of Light, Willis has instead opted to stay in League One and join Jack Ross' side - perhaps with thanks to a little help from Meyler.

In his first club interview, Willis revealed he spoke to another recent signing Lee Burge - who also joined from Coventry this summer. The pair both came through the academy at the Midlands club.

However, it seems Willis sought advice from elsewhere too, with Meyler tweeting in response to the announcement: "Yes lad. I'm glad you listened to me."

Meyler and Willis have been team-mates for the past six months, with the Irishman spending the second half of the season on loan at the Ricoh Arena. Meyler made 31 appearances in three seasons with the Black Cats between 2009 and 2012.

And Sunderland fans were quick to pick up on his tweet, many christening him 'Agent Meyler'. One fan even asked if he had the number of Peterborough attacking midfielder Marcus Maddison - a player who would prove a very popular addition to the Sunderland squad this summer.

Ross' squad might be overloaded with midfielders but many also asked when he was 'coming home' himself. He has one year to run on his current deal but has reportedly been told to find a new club.
