Agencies are rejecting me because I’m starting afresh in my mid-forties

Twice a week we publish problems that will feature in a forthcoming Dear Jeremy advice column in the Saturday Guardian so that readers can offer their own advice and suggestions. We then print the best of your comments alongside Jeremy’s own insights. Here is the latest dilemma – what are your thoughts?

I am over 45 and three years ago decided to start to learn bookkeeping with the aim to find a job as invoicing clerk.

I studied very hard while still working and looking after my family and house. I managed to complete three levels of City and Guild bookkeeping and I got also a qualification for Sage 50.

However, now that I am going around employment agencies I am not having much luck because of my lack of experience. I cannot afford to work as a volunteer as I need money.

Do you have any suggestions?

Do you need advice on a work issue? For Jeremy’s and readers’ help, send a brief email to dear.jeremy@theguardian.com. Please note that he is unable to answer questions of a legal nature or to reply personally.
