Ageing star sets high standards and shares insight into relationship with Steve Bruce

Federico Fernandez's attitude to his future at Newcastle United is exactly what fans want to hear - he's not signed a new deal to simply make up the numbers.

The 32-year-old has been handed a two-year extension at the club, and despite his advancing years has made it clear that he's determined to keep his place in the first team.

That's a credit to his attitude and goals, especially at an age when some players at this point in their careers are looking more at the financial security of one last deal rather than what can be achieved on the pitch.

The Argentine, who played 24 times last season in a campaign disrupted by COVID-19 and injury, is well aware of the standards he has to maintain to ensure his personal ambitions are met.

Speaking to NUFC TV about it, he said: "As you get older you enjoy every single day - you have to perform every single day in training.

"This is the mentality we want. You need to push."

Fernandez made reference to the young players coming through and having to step up his efforts to keep his spot while also having the opportunity to pass on his experience.

It gives an insight into why United have signed him up - he's a key figure, a wise head who head coach Steve Bruce trusts to lead.

Fernandez admits that the relationship between Bruce and him is an 'honest' one, and that is also an important factor.

When things were tough last season, the squad had to face up to the problems and some harsh truths were thrashed out - Fernandez is not one to hold back his thoughts.

The defender has a key role to play at Newcastle on and off the pitch - and as an elder statesman of the squad will be a key player heading into the new season.
