A dozen residents and staff at an aged care facility in the New South Wales central west have tested positive to COVID-19.

A resident at the Gosling Creek Aged Care facility in Orange tested positive for the virus after displaying flu-like symptoms.

During subsequent testing, a further six residents and five staff have returned positive results, and will subsequently have to isolate over Christmas.

In a statement, the facility says no residents are displaying concerning health conditions.

"Eighty-six per cent of Gosling Creek residents are fully vaccinated, and 68 per cent of those have received their booster shot," a spokesperson said.

"All staff members at Gosling Creek, including allied health contractors, are fully vaccinated.

There is no indication whether the residents and staff have been infected with the Omicron variant.

All residents have been told to remain inside their rooms for their own protection until given clearance by the local public health unit.

The spokesperson for the facility said there would be visitor restrictions.

"This means visitors are restricted; however, visits on compassionate grounds are always considered.

"Until we know how long we will need to manage the outbreak, we are encouraging families to stay in touch via Zoom video calls."

Testing for all residents and staff has begun, with results expected to arrive within the next 24 to 48 hours.

The Western NSW Local Health District recorded 29 new infections in the latest reporting period.
