Agbonlahor makes 'baffling' Joelinton claim and names Newcastle duo exempt from transfer overhaul

Gabby Agbonlahor has questioned the recent praise for Newcastle United's record signing Joelinton.

The former number nine has emerged as one of the Magpies' standout performers during Eddie Howe's first seven matches in charge.

The new head coach has outlined his confidence in the Brazilian to become a 'huge player' for Newcastle, despite his well-documented struggles on Tyneside.

Joelinton was initially signed to lead the line but could not deliver as a lone striker, and later gave up the number nine shirt to Callum Wilson.

The 25-year-old had struggled to convince in a number of roles under Howe's predecessor Steve Bruce

Joelinton has since started to change fans' long-held opinions with a number of hard-working displays in several positions.

However, Agbonlahor insists he still has not seen 'any quality' from the former Hoffenheim forward.

The talkSPORT pundit and former Aston Villa striker also believes Howe will need to sign almost an entirely new team with their Premier League status at serious risk.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider: “I don’t see anything that I’m watching that shows me any quality.

“People are raving about Joelinton but how many goals has he scored? How many assists has he got?

“It’s all right looking busy, I just don’t understand. It baffles me.

“They need like 11 new players, seriously. Eight or nine can come straight in. Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin can keep their place but the rest I’d get rid of, to be honest.”
