Labor’s hate speech bill faces potential defeat when parliament returns next week after the Coalition and Greens signalled their opposition to the legislation.
Mehreen Faruqi said the Greens would not back the laws in their current form, arguing the bill should be properly scrutinised and that groups including the LGBTQ+ community should also be protected from hatred.
Sussan Ley labelled the legislation “unsalvageable”, prompting a stunned Anthony Albanese to claim the Coalition was “still playing politics” after it demanded parliament be recalled early after the Bondi terror attack.
The Executive Council of Australian Jewry said the bill failing to pass would be a “retrograde step” and urged the Coalition to rethink its opposition.
