Good afternoon.
Ben Carroll has been sworn in as the new premier of Victoria, with his first act as leader to announce a royal commission into alleged corruption in the construction sector.
Just four months out from the state election, it was announced Carroll had been unanimously endorsed for the role, while the transport infrastructure minister, Gabrielle Williams, secured the deputy leadership. Allan had declared her intention to contest the leadership ballot yesterday but this morning announced her resignation.
Carroll cast his leadership as a new era for Labor politics in Victoria, declaring “I’m not Daniel Andrews, I’m not Jacinta Allan”, and that “change starts today”.
