Aftermath of Storm Barra as Scotland faces flood alerts and power outages

Storm Barra battered Scotland yesterday with snow, ice and wind, and whilst the worst of the weather has passed, the country faces flooding and power outages in its aftermath.

The country is experiencing flood alerts with flooding widespread in the northeast.

There are currently five flood alerts in place by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency ( SEPA ) with three more serious flood warnings concentrated in the northeast.

Meanwhile Storm Barra, which reached huge gusts up to 69 mph in Scotland, has also brought on power outages.

Energy supplier SSEN is reporting power outages with the most cuts - 26 at present - clustered in the northeast.

Other outages include two in Dundee, four on the west coast and islands in Inverness, Colonsay and Coll.

As for today's weather, expect a wet and windy day.

BBC Scotland Weather forecaster Kirsteen MacDonald said: "Low pressure associated with Storm Barra continues to influence our weather today, although it's a much weaker affair.

"Showers or longer spells of rain particularly around northern and eastern areas turning wintry over high ground.

"Otherwise fewer showers, more in the way of breaks in the cloud, lighter winds compared with yesterday although gale force gusts for the northern isles at times.

"Into this evening and into tonight, scattered showers for the northern isles and the northeast along western coastal areas too. Otherwise dry with some clear periods, a touch of frost for many and the risk of some icy patches."
