The operator of online fashion shopping website Zozotown, Zozo Inc., unveiled on Monday a new service called "Zozomat" that enables customers to measure the shape of their feet with a smartphone camera.
In addition to recommending shoes for customers to buy online based on their 3D foot measurements, Zozo also plans to get companies to order make shoes based on data recorded by the device.
By placing a foot on the mat and using a smartphone camera to take an image, users can measure not only the length of their feet but also the width of their heels and instep height in millimeters, according to the company.
Reservations for the service started on Monday, and the mat will be shipped free of charge later in the year. Zozo is also looking for companies that can order make shoes and develop related products based on the data.
Zozo has also developed a "Zozosuit" device that measures body size, enabling customers to find clothes that fit their body shape based on the data.
However, Zozo has been scaling back the service because there have been many complaints about delivery delays among other issues.
