The Israeli city of Lod, 10 kilometres from Tel Aviv, is still reeling from recent deadly violence. Back in May, amid a flare-up in tensions between Israel and Hamas, a protest in support of Palestinians in East Jerusalem degenerated. The mixed city of 77,000 residents, where Jews and Arabs have always lived side by side, was suddenly the scene of riots. Two men lost their lives – one Jew, one Arab – as synagogues were set on fire, a Muslim cemetery desecrated and 100 people arrested. Calm has since returned, but for how long? Catherine Norris-Trent and Julie Dungelhoeff report.
