I agree with Tony Blair’s strong plea that “Isis must be crushed” (Report, 28 March). But before Isis is crushed, I would like to know from Mr Blair: 1) who is responsible for its rise to power in half-a-dozen countries in the Middle East and north Africa; 2) who finances it; 3) where it gets its modern weapons from; 4) where it gets petrol from; 5) who handles its PR work; and 6) why the US is reluctant to take decisive action against it.

• With half the population of Syria now scattered around the region, and tens of thousands in camps with the bare minimum of facilities, I think it is almost obscene to even contemplate wasting money, time and expertise on restoring the ruined parts of Palmyra (Report, 29 March). Nothing should be done apart from erecting a large sign outside saying: “Welcome to the ruins of our once-great city, destroyed by mindless fanatics in the name of their twisted version of Islam.”
