After spat, Uttar Pradesh cop on a video call with husband kills self

GHAZIABAD: A 28-year-old constable with Uttar Pradesh Police hung herself from a ceiling fan while on a video call with her husband — an Army soldier posted in Jalandhar — on Thursday night, allegedly after the two of them had an argument.

The husband immediately called a neighbour in the RK Puram area of Govindpuram, but by the time he reached their place, it was too late.

The neighbour rushed the constable to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival. Police said on Friday they are waiting for the autopsy report.

The woman was from Aurangabad in the Bulandshahr district. She joined UP Police in 2016 and was posted as a constableat the collectorate in Ghaziabad.

In 2018, she got married to the soldier, who is from Gautam Budh Nagar and is currently posted in Jalandhar in Punjab. They had a two-year-old son.

According to the police, the woman constable got back to her rented accommodation in Govindpuram around 9pm on Thursday. She made the video call to her husband soon afterwards.

The two of them had a heated argument. “The constable took a dupatta and tied it to the ceiling fan while the video call was on,” said Nipurn Aggarwal, the superintendent of police (City-1).

“Seeing this, the man cut the call and reached out to the owner of the rented accommodation, Madan Kumar, who lives on the ground floor of the building. He went up to the cop’s home within minutes but she had locked the door from inside. Kumar broke open the door, brought her down and took her to a nearby hospital. However, the doctors at the hospital declared her dead,” the police superintendent told TOI.

According to another police officer, the couple had been fighting for a few days because the husband wanted the constable to shift to his parents’ house in Jarcha village of Gautam Budh Nagar.

He wanted her to take care of his parents as his brother had died in an accident recently.

The constable was against moving to the village and commuting to her workplace in Ghaziabad on a daily basis.

“Their family members had also intervened and tried to resolve the issue between the couple, but they couldn’t,” the police officer said.

No complaint in this matter has been registered with the police so far.
