5 men injured in shootings on West, Northwest sides

March 25--Five men were wounded in separate shootings since late Tuesday morning on the West and Northwest sides, police said.

Most recently, a 30-year-old man was shot at 3:11 a.m. Wednesday in the Cragin neighborhood on the Northwest Side, said Officer Ron Gaines, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.

The man was in the 5500 block of West Belmont Avenue when he got into an argument after getting into a car accident with another person, Gaines said.

The 30-year-old was sitting in his vehicle when the person from the other vehicle came out and shot him in the stomach, Gaines said.

The man managed to drive himself to Community First Medical Center, where his condition stabilized, Gaines said.

The attacker fled the scene, and no one was in custody as of early Wednesday.

Around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, a 24-year-old man walked into West Suburban Medical Center after being shot in the South Austin neighborhood, said police spokeswoman Officer Amina Greer.

The man was in the 0-100 block of North Mason Avenue when he was shot in the arm, Greer said, citing preliminary information.

The man managed to get himself into the hospital, where his condition stabilized, she said.

At 5:33 p.m. Tuesday, a 31-year-old man was driving his car in the 2900 block of North Sacramento Avenue when another person in another vehicle drove up and shot him, said police spokesman Officer Thomas Sweeney.

After being shot in the neck, the man continued driving and made his way onto southbound Kennedy Expressway in the Avondale neighborhood, where he pulled over. He managed to get a cell phone from another person and paramedics were called, said police.

The man, who is a known gang member, was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Hospital, where his condition stabilized. The on ramp near Sacramento Avenue was briefly closed, said Illinois State Police officials.

About 10 minutes earlier, a 23-year-old man walked into West Suburban Medical Center after being shot in the West Humboldt Park neighborhood around 5:20 p.m., Greer said.

The man was walking in the 4200 block of West Division Street when an attacker across the street fired shots, striking him in the foot. His condition stabilized, and no other information was immediately available, Greer said.

Earlier on Tuesday morning, a 26-year-old man was shot in the Homan Square neighborhood, police said.

Police found the man in the 3300 block of West Lexington Avenue about 11:25 a.m.

He had leg and hand wounds, police said. Paramedics took him to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition stabilized.

Police said the man was not cooperating with investigators. No one is in custody and detectives are investigating.
