After knee procedure, backup Geno Smith determined to play vs. Vikings

Backup quarterback Geno Smith got the start for the Seattle Seahawks Thursday night against the Denver Broncos despite dealing with a cyst that had developed in his knee.

Following the game, Smith had the cyst removed and returned in time to watch his teammates resume practice Sunday morning.

“He’s out here moving around already, so the next day he was OK,” Carroll told reporters. “It wasn’t a ligament or cartilage repair. This was something else. He had a little cyst in there they had to work out – they got it – and so his recovery should be, could be, before the next game.

“That could be pushing it, but he’s determined to come back and play against Minnesota.”

On Saturday, Seattle signed backup quarterback J.T. Barrett for insurance.

The Seahawks have a rare extended break between the next preseason game, which isn’t scheduled until next Sunday night, giving Smith and the rest of the squad a few extra days to recover and return to the practice field.
