After drawing reported interest from Broncos, Brian Hoyer signs with Colts

After the Broncos cut quarterback Kevin Hogan, ESPN’s Dianna Russini reported that Denver was interested in veteran Brian Hoyer, who was released by the Patriots on Saturday. The Broncos may have been interested but they ultimately went in a different direction, claiming Brandon Allen off waivers instead.

After being passed over by Denver, Hoyer signed a three-year deal with the Colts. Hoyer is expected to begin the year as Jacoby Brissett’s backup.

Hoyer (6-2, 216 pounds) is a 33-year-old quarterback that has spent time with seven different teams in the NFL. He probably could have adjusted to the Broncos’ offense quickly because he played under Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco, Houston and Cleveland.

Rich Scangarello, Denver’s offensive coordinator, is a Shanahan understudy. He also was the 49ers’ quarterbacks coach when Hoyer served as San Francisco’s backup during the 2017 season.

Hoyer has thrown for 9,902 yards and 48 touchdowns against 30 interceptions since entering the league as a college free agent out of Michigan State with New England in 2009.
